PROFESSIONAL SERVICES SPOTLIGHT

School district hosts first annual Educational Equity Edcamp

Northeast Metro 916 Intermediate School District brought together more than 200 participants for the first annual Educational Equity Edcamp in partnership with Hamline University.

Edcamps are un-conference style professional development workshops where participants collaboratively decide the topics during the event and sessions are facilitated by anyone. Open dialogue and a willingness to share, not planned presentations, drive the learning at Edcamps.

In the current turbulent social and political climate, educators feel a deep, urgent responsibility to address the systemic inequity and oppression lived by students and families of color. This event is one way to leverage the expertise and creative ideas of those who work with or are concerned about children and the education the receive in our schools.

"As educators, we need to be champions for students and families of color, challenge systemic educational disparities, and work to dismantle existing systems of oppression and build new, equitable systems and pedagogies in their place," said Jean Jordan, director of educational services at Northeast Metro 916. "Teachers can and do make a difference every day."
